What is the difference between science research and applied science?

And can you give me an example of both science research and applied science?

Research is done with no goal in mind, merely to see where it goes or to answer questions that may or may not have application to our daily lives – eg “why do stars form only in galaxies?”, or “how many times has the earth’s magnetic field switched polarity in the last million years?”, or “can I make a light beam out of one frequency of light photons?”

Applied science is taking the “light beam of one frequency” and using it (a laser) to create and play a DVD. Applied science uses the results of basic scientific research to affect our daily lives in some way, eg plastic grocery bags, cell phones, “smart” bombs, 3-D movies.
